Toy culture holds a distinct place in everyday life in Japan. Capsule toy machines and plush-filled arcades appear throughout the city, offering small moments of surprise, nostalgia, and joy. These objects—both playful and excessive—have become embedded in contemporary Japanese culture, blurring childhood memory with adult experience.
A Tokyo Toy Story draws from the visual language of gachapon and plush figures, translating it into lived, everyday scenes. Bold colours, playful accessories, and expressive details emerge naturally within the city rather than as spectacle.
Following its subjects through ordinary moments—walking the streets, sharing ice cream, pausing in transit — the work reflects how imagination and playfulness quietly coexist with daily life in Tokyo, where joy often appears in its most unassuming forms.
